Meet Dwight Monck
Dwight Monck was born and raised in London, a relatively small city located in the heart of Southern Ontario, and after schooling was complete his two passions collided: flying and policing. Initially, flying seemed to be his future and Dwight obtained his Private and Commercial pilot licence but it wasn’t too many years after meeting his wife, Karen, that Dwight found himself the father of two young boys and embarked upon a career in policing. He started in Exeter Ontario and when an opportunity for a new adventure arose in 1995, Dwight packed up his family, the dog, the cat and transferred with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to Sioux Lookout to become part of an elite team known as the “Northwest Patrol Unit”. This specialized detachment was responsible for the policing of all the fly-in remote First Nations communities from Sioux Lookout to as far north as Fort Severn on Hudson Bay.
Having spent three fantastic years travelling the far north of Ontario and meeting some wonderful folks, his two passions finally met. In 1998, Dwight was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to Thunder Bay as a pilot with the OPP Aviation Services. In 2003, another transfer led to Pickle Lake as detachment commander. In 2007 a decision was made to leave policing and join the private sector, operating two of his own small businesses while keeping his hand in aviation with Wasaya Airways.
Changing gears again, in 2018 Dwight accepted a new challenge as mayor of the Municipality of Pickle Lake. It was during this time that he realized how important it is to have solid representation in Queen’s Park and the idea of becoming involved in provincial politics was born. When asked how he could make a difference, his response was this:
“I believe my knowledge of the Kiiwetinoong riding and the people who reside within it will enable me to speak for everyone and be the conduit needed to take our issues to Parliament. In the next few years, it will be crucial to have strong leadership to bring our area back to pre-Covid prosperity. We need to be on the same team. Premier Ford’s time in office during this unforeseen pandemic has been challenging and I feel his leadership has been strong. I am honoured to have been chosen as the PC candidate for the Kiiwetinoong riding. It is my home”.
